Self-service Check-outs
I like the concept
But they seem a bit shit
Often the need for interference by a staff member
Which is wot you tried to avoid in the first place
Tesco a bit less shit than Morrison, yet still a bit shit
How's Sainsbury/Waitrose doing?
When will LIDL introduce it?

Re: Self-service Check-outs
Put item in bagging area - if bagging area full wait for it to register on the screen and put the bag on the floor. 10 seconds later you can carry on.

Better than online shopping - takes just as long and you know the herberts that work at the depot won't bother ferreting around at the back trying to find the best use by date.

And their replacements are shit - I ordered 200g cashew nuts last time and got it replaced with a 30g bag.

Re: Self-service Check-outs
They save customers neither time or money - the process of scanning items is, if anything, slower when done by a customer than when it is done by a "trained", or at least experienced, check out operative.

If I got a guaranteed, provable, personal, at point-of-purchase 10% discount for using a self-service check- out, I may be interested in investigating the concept.

Re: Self-service Check-outs

They need bigger bagging area. That's the issue.
Trying to balance two bagloads in that little area is daft, but required. I asked, can I take a bag off or wot? They said yes. But when u do, the system gets confused.

Tesco do not like it when you bleed on their counter though.

That happened to me at the weekend.

Damn periods.

Re: Self-service Check-outs
i used these the other day. Had some razor blades in the basket which scanned perfectly well so I popped them in the bag and didnt give it a second thought.

On leaving the store the alarm goes off. Nobody batted an eyelid. Not even the security guard by the travelator thingy.

Free razor blades in Tesco, people.

It's more the fact they usually aren't working as opposed to a user-interface problem.

I think I'll be fine without your tutelage, and smug patronising undertone.

Given your mobile phone still has Snake on it I'll take a pass on your technical skills thank you.

Hey Pancho, my spuddy buddy... as modern tech goes, supermarket self-service machines are pretty basic, but as you're struggling, I could lend you my superior skills and teach you, if you like.

Re: Self-service Check-outs
The self servs at B&Q are fucking crap.

They never update the potted plants and garden stuff reductions so when you get there you spend more time there whilst an assistant runs off to find the relevant bar code.

What a pathetic life I lead..

Re: Self-service Check-outs
Although it fucks me right off when (usually) some woman just takes a trolley to the self service checkout to avoid the queue at the full counter, thus blocking up all the space for everyone else and taking forever because the bloody thing's not designed for more than about 10-12 items.

I only shop at M&S or Waitrose. M&S work fine but not seen at Waitrose.

Re: Self-service Check-outs
They are ok. I'd say 7-8 times out of 10 they are quicker and have no problem requiring a member of staff to sort it out. I'd say most times there is a problem its caused by the person using it, rather than the system.

Why are you worried that others are worried, Penners?

Anyway, no one's worried, we're just having a moan up.

I love a good moan up.
